Medical Information

Regular school attendance is essential to every child’s education, and South Wigston High School is committed to supporting learners in achieving the highest possible levels of attendance. While many learners may occasionally require short-term medication, such as a course of antibiotics, others may have long-term medical conditions that require ongoing treatment during the school day, including conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, or ADHD.

To ensure the safe management and administration of medicines, the following procedures apply:

• Medicines should only be brought into school when it is necessary for a learner’s health and wellbeing and when it would be detrimental for the medication not to be taken during the school day.
  
  
• The school can only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse prescriber, or pharmacist prescriber.
  
  
• Parents/carers must complete a Request for Administration of Medicines form, available from Reception or on WEDUC.
  
  
• Medication cannot be administered unless a completed Request for Administration of Medicines form has been received.
  
  
• All medicines must be provided in their original pharmacy-dispensed container and must include the manufacturer’s instructions for administration.
  
  
• The school cannot administer medicines containing ibuprofen or aspirin to learners under the age of 16 unless they have been prescribed by a doctor.
  
  
• Paracetamol will only be administered where written consent has been provided by a parent or carer.
•  Medicines will be stored securely in a locked cabinet or, where required, in a refrigerator.
  
  
•  Learners are required to go to Reception to receive their medication.
  
  
• Accurate records will be maintained, detailing the medication administered, the dosage given, the time of administration, and the staff member responsible.
  
  
• All medication will be checked by staff prior to administration.
  
  
• Parents/carers are responsible for ensuring that all medication, including inhalers and Autoinjectors, remains in date and for informing the school of any changes to their child’s medical needs or prescribed medication.
